High school student who fell from climbing tower receives $4.75 million verdict

A York County jury awarded a high school student paralyzed in a climbing tower accident $4.75 million because of negligence. The verdict was reported by Fred Horlbeck in the June 29, 2009 edition of South Carolina Lawyers Weekly.

Larry Keeter, a Fort Mill High senior at the time, fell 25 feet to the ground during a school field day in May 2006 after a fellow student lost her grip on the rope supporting him. Mr. Keeter, now 20, suffered a fractured vertebra that left him a paraplegic. The jury’s verdict awarded $3.64 million in actual damages and $1.1 million in punitive damages on claims of strict liability, general negligence, products liability negligence, and loss of service.
