Retired state workers awarded $31.8 million

The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered the State to refund retirement contributions, plus interest, made by state workers participating in the Teacher and Employee Retention Incentive program, totaling $31.8 million. The May ruling, captioned Layman v. State, 368 S.C. 631, 630 S.E.2d 265 (2006), returns paid-in money to more than 13,000 participants, most of whom are teachers. The Court’s ruling affirmed a judgment that the State breached a contract with state retirement worker.
